Opinion: Vijay Krishna Acharya’s Thugs Of Hindostan gives what it promised, bucketful entertainment.

With a lot of negativity going around the Vijay Krishna Acharya’s magnum opus Action adventure Thugs of Hindostan, I held back my review for a couple of days so that unconstructiveness on the social media should die down and genuine audiences can read it and plan to watch the movie.

See being honest, it is not the greatest cinema on earth or a life-changing one and neither the director nor the two legends in the film claimed it before the release, in fact at the time of trailer launch Vijay Krishna Acharya said he made an entertaining irreverent period film which mainly an action adventure but the problem is maybe taking two of the most reverent megastars gave some other hopes to the people in general, that they might have thought Thugs of Hindostan will be a grand serious stuff. Megastar Aamir Khan is coming back after three socially relevant classics PK, Secret Superstar and Dangal and Legendary Bachchan after Pink. So, let me tell you it is not like that at all, this is just a popcorn action adventure which is meant to enjoy. Acharaya built a fantasy land in India of 1700-1800s called Raunakpur and gives us nicely choreographed and well-executed action sequences, trust me all the action in the movie are so nicely done that we may say, yes Indian films can do that too. All thanks to action choreography of Lee Whittaker and his team. The cinematography of Manush Nandan makes the film visually stunning, the production design of Sumit Basu is fantastic, and in just 200 odd crores the film looks huge and lavish. The detailing of the 1800s are well researched, be it the mammoth ships, costumes (except the cinematically liberal Manish Malhotra designed Katrina Kaif’s dresses), props and feel. Amitabh Bachchan is rock solid as Khudabaksh and to amaze us, at the age 76 he performed some really superb action sequences. Fatima Sana Sheikh is brilliant in the action scenes, somehow her performance is only about fine but she is here to stay for long. Katrina Kaif danced her heart out on the steps of Prabhudeva and Chinni Prakash, she looked gorgeous in her 3 scenes and that’s what she does the best. Lloyd Owen as Clive is good but not that menacing, Zeeshan Ayyub is a good comic relief. The music of Ajay-Atul goes well with the film; BGM of John Stewart is massy. But the heart and the soul of the film is Firangi Mallah, the character played Aamir Khan, the actor’s inherent charm and charisma along with his impeccable acting prowess sails this film out.

Every time I thought the film will fall he with his acting talent along with some capable writing lifted the film up. He is by far the biggest superstar and the best actor we have today. It is really good to see two legends, Khan and Bachchan together for the first time, all the three encounter scenes between them are memorable which will float in your mind even after the film and of course the last scene which comes after the climax is so refreshing, watch out for that.

It is not that the film is complete; it has many negatives but more positives. The direction of Acharya is good but his writing is inconsistent and little formulaic. He ended up writing a revenge story, okay fine these visual delights are like that, we all know the superheroes will kill the villains, we knew junior Baahubali will kill Bhallala Dev but how it unfolds that matters. But I have to admit his vision, scale and the grandeur are commendable, two years of hard work is visible.
The VFX is crisp except for two shots which came just before the interval, but the makers have achieved praiseworthy visual effects. The editing is fine but the emotional track is little weak, I wanted to see more of Zafira and Firangi’s equation which is not well developed. Maybe the film would have even more interesting if Acharya wrote it from the perspective of Firangi instead of Zafira, sounds good no? The adventures of Firangi Mallah, the Thug, what say? Anyway, what we have got is what we have got and it is a Paisa Vasool entertainment, not a perfect film what people always expect from Aamir but is not bad at all. Easily one of the best mass entertainers I have seen in ages, so it gives what it promised, a bucketful entertainment. The Netflix and Amazon prime generation please don’t be too serious about it, be kind to the film the way you do it with Hollywood glossy entertainers, just enjoy the film, go with families; take along the kids in IMAX, 4DX and the best screens near you and yes masses will love it, for a change they will get a technically strong masala entertainer. Not memorable and great like other Aamir films but a satisfactory potboiler for festival holidays, and definitely it doesn’t deserve the negativity. I’ll go with 3.5 stars out of 5.
