Opinion: US Open 2017 ‘Rise from Ashes’ for Some but Thrills Were None.
“RISE FROM THE ASHES” yes that’s what this US OPEN 2017 was all about, be it RAFAL NADAL, SLOANE STEPHENS, MADISON KEYS, DEL POTRO, VENUS WILLIAMS in fact such has been the year that those who were almost considered going into sunset rose like never before in fact had one of their best years of their careers it shows and ROGER FEDERER epitomizes it the best he had year which was better than all the rest.
WORLD NO.1 NADAL is the best inspiration if anyone was looking for hard work dedication, perseverance, never say die attitude and fighting for every point as if his life depended on it every moment. They way he steamrolled his finals opponent the 32 ranked KEVIN ANDERSON in Two and half hours proved once again that if you have the will and desire then no matter how many injuries or bad days, your time will eventually come some day, though luck and destiny plays a very important role also no doubt we might say. Don’t have to look beyond MURRAY AND NOVAK who were ruiling the roost for last Two years or so and look at them now both struggling with injuries which subsequent has an effect on form as if the Energy got transferred from those two back to where it initially belonged and now ROGER AND RAFAL look the fittest.
The runners up from SOUTH AFRICA himself has battled through serious carrier threatening health conditions where even the doctors were against him playing and complete rest for an year but KEVIN battled all odds and reached the finals of his first major and that’s commendable.
RAFA for the full two weeks looked the champion of old and when he wins 100 percent points at the net in finals 16 put of 16 , proves infact better than before where you don’t stand a chance unless you play at the highest level for the entire duration and that only who selected few could keep it up with him and one of them ROGER actually looked a little out of sorts and they way he missed crucial points during his slam bang with ALEXANDER DEL POTRO ,who himself has been injury prone all his life but when at his best has the might to beat anyone on given day the way he dealt with ROGER in four sets made him a strong contender in the semis but after winning the first set he just couldn’t cope up with what NADAL had to offer thus again proving the point to beat RAFA or ROGER when they at their best you have to go beyond what anyone can expect.
The women’s final had two opponents who not that dint have the potential but the spate of injuries had almost put them on the back foot and the form in which they came to the big Apple was not that it would make them one of the favorites but then as we mentioned this has been the year of the injurious getting redemption and that’s what the eventual winners SLOANE STEPHENS got, as she had been through a period with injuries which led to her being 957 in the middle of the year to entering the draw as 83 ranked to eventually cracking into top 20 after her first major victory.
Her opponent in finals and her on tour best friend MADISON KEYS who too was coming back from yes you guessed right injuries and that too of the wrist which led to her dropping out of top ten but when fit everyone new what potential she had and that was aptly displayed until the finals where everything fell apart and she got crushed in a few minutes more than an hour.
That American tennis is healthy (so is the rivalries as both the finalist sat near each other giggling) especially in the women’s field and what’s refreshing is both the old guard and the new are doing great be it the two young finalist and one of the semi finalist COCO VANDEWEGHE or the taking the OLD is GOLD to a new level VENUS WILLIAMS who was just two points away from the finals and had it not been SLOANE showcasing one of the shots of the tournament back hand down the line to save her from facing match point, WILLIAMS would have been on cloud nine or on VENUS at 37 years is still going strong infact having the best period in 5 years, when her competitors retired almost a decade ago.
The women’s doubles and mix doubles both had one thing in common which has actually become a norm of sorts MARTINA HINGIS the Swiss miss who herself had to retire at her peak due to the foot injury but then came back after a few years won along with Taiwanese CHAN YUNG-JAN in the women’s doubles
And repeated her Wimbledon victory with brother ANDY MURRAY doubles specialist and creating a name for himself JAMIE MURRY and now has 25 grand slam titles to create her own legacy.
The men’s doubles saw DUTCHMAN JEAN-JULIEN ROGER teaming up with ROMANIAN HORIA TECAU and getting the better of FELICIANO LOPEZ and MARC LOPEZ in straight sets, but the winners were more in news for ROGER’S for what he wore and the comments he made in post which were all related to peace.
The INDIAN connection remained connected till SANIA MIRZA survived and she did not disappoint as made to the semi-final’s along with her Chinese opponent SHUAI PENG before loosing to the EVENTUAL WINNERS and her past partner with whom had become world no.1 and won quite a few tournaments but then had parted ways thus spoiling an opportunity on to becoming a legendary team, LEANDER PEAS and MAHESH BHUPATHI ego trip which destroyed everything what they had achieved and we’re going to. Maybe it’s in Indian DNA.
RAFA(1) beat ANDERSON(28)
6-3, 6-3, 6-4
SLOANE beat KEYS
ROGER/TECAU(12) beat LOPEZ / MARC(11)
HINGIS/JAN beat LUCIE/KATERINA
HINGIS/ JAMIE beat CHAN/ MICHEAL
6-1, 4-6, (10-8)
Finally though AGE is no BAR was was taken to the next level and young Turks too made their mark but in terms of closeness and thrills of matches a spark here or there but overall just like Wimbledon it was a Damb squib especially the lopsided finals.
In the end the US OPEN 2017 can be best summoned as – “Rise from Ashes for players but not so thrilling for spectators“.
