Opinion: Darren Aronofsky’s mother! is a disturbing poetic dark thriller with Jennifer Lawrence in a never seen before avatar.
Finally, I have seen Jennifer Lawrence starrer mother, I am an admirer of Darren Aronofsky, his films always have something to debate about and think. To be frank, I am a Brobdingnagian fan of Jennifer Lawrence that’s the reason why I was desperate to watch it. I missed the film when it was screened at the Jio MAMI film festival and it is yet to release commercially in India. So when one of my friends who works in the USA was coming back to India to celebrate Christmas I requested him to bring the DVD of the movie mother! So that I can watch it in my home theater. Eventually, I saw it on home video and trust me since then I am disturbed. It is one film which will haunt you for quite some time. I am depressed, amazed and lost in the film at the same time.
It is brutally poetic, and someone please give Jennifer Lawrence an Oscar. She as the mother is heartbreakingly apt, you cry with her, smile with her and care for her all the time. What an actor she is, an asset for a visionary director like Darren Aronofsky, he is a cinematic a genius. The Fountain, Black Swan, Noah n now this, his films are not for general mass, but for art lovers. Surreal and dark with a lot to understand, I think mother! is Aronofsky’s most risky film yet, if not the most complex, definitely The Fountain was.
The tone and pace might make you uncomfortable, you have to submit yourself completely to the film’s proceedings to watch it as the mother! is not just a film but an experience. It is an allegory of Bible with contemporary metaphors, not everyone can watch this one but I want everyone to watch it and give something unusual to their minds and senses to taste. I am still thinking about it, how well in a format of a thriller the movie talks about some very important elementary questions. It shows Humanity a mirror and gives art lover’s intellect a delight. Technically the film can be rated as one of the best indoor shot films of all time, the camera moves with the unbelievable vision of Darren Aronofsky, it is not a Jennifer Lawrence vehicle, it is a director’s masterpiece. Lawrence will be lost after the first scene as she becomes the mother! completely. Javier Bardem as the creator sorry ‘Him’ (watch the film to find out why) is at the top of his game. Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer as the intruder couple are suspiciously outstanding. The BGM is terrific, takes you to another world. I don’t want to find mistakes in the film because I want to dig deep and think about it. This is a film that you must see, not for the faint-hearted though. I am waiting for 29th December when it’ll hit the theatres in India to watch it again on the big screen. I’ll go with 4 stars out of 5, escapade this film.
