Film Review: Sultan
Film Review: Sultan – Salman’s Sultan is an ode to Salman’s movie career where he became a sensation all of a sudden though he started his career casually then in arrogance saw a fall followed by his famous redemption and is still flying high. Sultan Ali Khan’s story is also same but the backdrop is wrestling or would say Sports because in the 1st half Salman is a wrestler and in the second he is a Mix Martial art fighter. Yes its bit illogical, how can someone switch his sport so easily? But again its Salman Khan and its eid, we need him to cheer in the theatres and want him to knock down people. He is Salman Khan, He doesn’t need an Avenger or Spiderman Franchise to do everything, he can do it all in any film.
Well, the movie will remind you of Sunny Deol’s Apne, it will remind you of Akshay Kumar starrer Brothers too which itself was a remake of Hollywood film Warrior, it will even also remind you of Farhan Akhtar’s Lakshya at one point. But it’ll only remind faintly, well we have already accepted Bodyguard which was a remake of Tamil movie which was a remake of a Telugu film and yet became a huge blockbuster then why not Sultan, its original. And in a hardcore commercial eid entertainer that too of Salman Khan these things don’t count. It has many songs too, most of them in the 1st half only, none of them are good. I hated ‘Baby ko Bass’ and ‘440 volts’ but does it matter? It is a Salman Khan song after all. Yes, I loved two songs, ‘Jag Ghoomeya’ which came in the second half and ‘Khoon Mein meri mitti’ but the latter is being overused in the film, but it does give you goosebumps because it is a good song and we have Salman Khan on screen. The direction of Ali Abbas Zafar is his best so far comparing it with Gundey and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan but he still would have done better than this both as a director and the writer of the movie. The script is predictable but the Screenplay of Aditya Chopra is smartly written for the single screen and family audiences. Since the start, We all knew that Salman will do everything which looks impossible easily and effortlessly but still screenplay which cleverly revolves around Salman makes us glued to the movie. It dips many times but Salman is the screenplay himself of the movie and does this matter in a Salman film?
Music of Vishal Shekhar is above average I would say and Editing by Rameshwar S. Bhagat is seriously weak. The cinematography of Artur Zurawski is very good and creates the feel of cities where the story revolves. Background Score of Julius Packiam is praiseworthy. Though I mostly felt the film is just a one-time watch port boiler but there are many good things too. Salman Khan with time is getting better as an actor and for a change, after a long time he had to put a lot of efforts to portray this role and he has done very well, he is the soul of the film and tries his best to bring out this larger than life character alive. Anushka physically doesn’t look a wrestler but she churns a fine performance. Supporting cast is good, special mention of Anant Sharma who plays the role of Sultan’s friend Govind. This melodrama does have some genuinely emotional scenes too which is good. Overall it is another Salman Potboiler but again these days we don’t rate Salman films as a whole, we compare his every new film from his own films which he did in the last 10 years. So, it is not pukeworthy like the two Dabbangs, Ready, Bodyguard, Veer or Kick. Neither it is dull like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, London Dreams or Jai Ho, nor superb like Bajrangi Bhaijaan. It lies somewhere with Ek Tha Tiger or Wanted, maybe little better. But does it matter? It’s a Salman Khan film and it is eid. ‘Sab Kaha Suna Maaf’ (Please forgive everything said and heard above) Enjoy eid with Salman. It has Dance, Romance, Action, comedy, Emotion, Drama and all. Yes, it’s a usual Salman Masala with a gimmick of wrestling. Do my stars matter? If it does then I’ll go with 2 stars.
