First things first Kahaani 2 has nothing to do with the original Kahaani, the plot is entirely new so do not treat it as a sequel to the previous film. Director Sujoy Ghosh has co-written Kahaani 2 – Durga Rani Singh with Suresh Nair and the most important thing about a thriller is hands down its story and I must say Sujoy and Suresh have succeeded in creating an intriguing storyline full of unexpected twists. Although the story becomes a bit predictable during the second half still the viewers will find themselves hooked onto their seats to find out how this story unfolds on the screen. A more thrilling second half would have made this the best thriller of recent times.
Talking about direction, Sujoy knows how to treat a thriller his direction is good although if you compare it with the previous Kahaani this one lacks the similar chills. Vidya Balan who plays the protagonist Durga Rani Singh has effortlessly essayed the role of a mother in the hunt of her kidnapped daughter. Second major character Inderjit played by Arjun Rampal and this one is a shocker, Rampal manages to look natural as the cop in charge of the case. But the biggest surprise is in the form of Jugal Hansraj who plays the antagonist in this thriller.
And full credit goes to the casting director to pitch this sort of unpredictable actors for supporting roles. There are not many songs in the film and the background score is just average, unlike the previous Kahaani where music played an integral part of the story. I not completely satisfied with the film but it is most probably without any doubt better than many trash commercial entertainers that Bollywood makes every now and then.
If you are a lover of the thriller genre then this one is recommended just keep the expectations low and Kahaani 2 will make for a good viewing.
