Maneesh Sharma’s FAN is not a perfect film, far from it but yes its an entertaining watch. The film begins brilliantly with the story of a FAN Gaurav, played by Shahrukh Khan, telling how he invested 25 years since his birth to his screen idol, Superstar Aryan Khanna again played by Shahrukh Khan. To be honest the 1st half is smooth as butter it slips in no time barring one minor jolt in screenplay when Gaurav lands in the Vanity Van of Sid Kapoor, latest screen sensation and rival of superstar Aryan Khanna with ease. It looked unreal and fabricated. 2nd half has some grand Chase sprints and thrilling scenes but mostly looks fake and illogical. Just for the sake of screenplay’s convenience Maneesh Sharma has shown us some things which is not possible in real life. The way Gaurav enters everywhere to take his maniac revenge from the superstar is very ill written. 2nd half is similar to the lines of one of Robert De Niro’s least successful 90s movie ‘The Fan’. But having said that its an entertaining watch, the biggest reason is Shahrukh Khan. His Charisma is unmistakable but this time his performance as Gaurav is stunning, full of energy, cute at times and yet dark. Full marks to the makeup team also.
His best performance in last 9 years after Chak de India, And probably his best film too as I found ‘My Name is Khan’ dull and pretentious though SRK as an actor tried his best in it. Coming back to FAN, his performance as Aryan Khanna is also good and to the point. So, Welcome Back ‘The Actor’ Shahrukh Khan. When he says as Aryan ‘Jab Khud sab kuch paaya hai to Gaurav ko bhi khud hi dekh lunga’ justifies the climax in a way. But still I got issues with the screenplay when Gaurav fires bullet in the end on Aryan which looked very bad when he just wanted to hear his ‘sorry’. But all said and done, the storys dips here and there with loopholes but Shahrukh Khan doesnt. Must watch once for his efforts, if you are fed up with his Masala films like Happy New Year, Dilwale etc. like me then FAN will give you a welcome change. Being an author I can say that its very difficult to make every film be it a masala port boiler or a good healthy entertainer than why waste efforts in tried and tested things, its better you try something different, good or bad its not in our hands. Dont confuse that FAN is an offbeat film, it does not have songs right but its a very much commercial entertainer, a thriller with a difference. That’s what we want as an audience. Maneesh Sharma’s Direction is good but could have been better, Script of Habib Fasal is inconsistent but different. Cinematography of Manu Anand is beautiful, Production design is Lavish, editing is fine and Background music of Andrea Guerra is apt.
Overall the movie’s message is great, ‘Dont be a Fan only, get inspired by your idol and find your own individuality by being an achiever’. But as Gaurav said even the star cannot understand a fan’s longing for him or her.
Maybe the film will not be in your mind for long, maybe it’ll be loved by only few sections but Gaurav will remain in everyone’s memory for long, I’ll go with 3 stars.
