The very moment I saw the cover of A Murder in Gurgaon it clicked instantly, from the word go Manish Dubey’s debut thriller made me excited to read it. Though I pre-ordered the book but haven’t got the time to read it for quite some time because of my work commitments and now finally as I am done with the book it’s time for me to tell you how I actually found it.
Gurgaon, December 2014. A young event manager, an ex-cop’s son, is murdered. Inspector Ajai Singh vows justice. There is little to begin with, and frustration mounts when the initial suspect – a reclusive woman with a mysterious past – is found missing.
Digging deeper, Singh uncovers a sordid tale of adultery, blackmail and revenge, only to find him staring at a conspiracy unlike any he has seen. There are deceits, little and big, to decode; the predator and victim are indistinguishable; his witnesses could be misleading; his closest ally may not be an ally at all. Will Singh succeed? Or has the sick, wily mind behind the crime always been a few steps ahead?
To begin with I want to say that it is a fast paced book, gives a blended feel of a novel cum play cum screenplay of a film which is experimental no doubt and risky but I can’t deny that I loved the narrative. The book is Manish Dubey’s first creation and he looks very confident with his writing, I will also add fearless. In a swiftly moving world where people hardly get time to see a movie, books are the last stop for them and Dubey has written a perfect novel for this generation. It is also very unsafe for a debutant author because traditional readers may not find this one worthy to read still he went ahead with what the story demanded and I am glad the publication house, Srishti backed him up. The chapters have been kept quite short and separated on the basis of dates making it easy to read and understand. The language is also very lucid and the book is more of a novella. This is a fantastic book for the beginners which may make them interested in books and reading. The best thing about the book is that even a regular and experienced reader will find it good and crafty. This is an entertaining stuff which I feel is the biggest triumph of the author. The story is set in Gurgaon where two different cases get knotted. Varun Dixit, a young event manager is found murdered at his apartment while a woman named Leena Puri is reported missing by her friend Bindia Sehgal. Gradually both the cases are found to be knotted and slowly the plotting is revealed and the killer gets exposed.
Because it is a thriller I will not give any spoiler but definitely it is not a completely convincing work of art. I myself being an author can understand it’s easier said than done as no art form is perfect but yes there’s a portion in an already short book which fails to grab the attention but the climax makes up for it. This is a brilliant start by Dubey and now I am eagerly waiting for his next and I can guarantee you all that the next title of Dubey will be near perfect if not perfect because he has it in him to be one of the most celebrated crime writers in the country, a writer is born. I’ll go with 3.5 stars.
