Bollywood Classics: Insaniyat (1955) The Only Time When Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand Worked Together.

In Bollywood Classics today I’ll talk about 1955 Blockbuster Insaniyat, the only film in which veteran actors Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand worked together. The film was produced and directed by S. S. Vasan, the songs were written by Akaash and theĀ  music was done by C.Ramchandra. It was a remake of 1950 Telugu mega hit film Palletoori Pilla.

The entertainer was promoted as the film of the year 1955, and as one of the greatest films of all time. The movie opened up with great response and ran for months but still it was not the biggest hit of the year which somewhat made it an underperformer despite being a blockbuster. The year was ruled by the holy Trinity of Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor but it was Kapoor’s Shree 420 which emerged as the highest grosser of the year. Dilip Kumar gave 4 hits that year with Azaad, Insaniyat, Udan Khatola and Devdas while Dev Anand delivered two hits in the form of Insaniyat and Munimji.

Insaniyat starred Dev Anand, Dilip Kumar, Bina Rai, Jayant and Shobhana Samarth in the lead and not to forget the wonder chimp.

Interestingly in an interview Dev Anand stated, “I hated doing Insaaniyat. They stuck a moustache on me. Aah! the only film with Dilip Kumar”. S S Vasan’s highly lavishly mounted Insaniyat initially had Bharat Bhooshan playing opposite Dilip Kumar for the hand of Bina Rai. But he politely opted out of Insaniyat when he saw that the film’s screenplay was heavily slanted in favour of Dilip Kumar. So that Dev Anand actually signed – on the Insaniyat dotted line – for the big money S S Vasan was offering him for doing the Bharat Bhooshan role in the film. But, on the sets, Dev Anand discovered that the film’s script did not give him any sort of a chance opposite Dilip Kumar. Journalist and Chetan Anand’s wife Uma Anand had even told about how Dev Anand felt shocked to discover Dilip Kumar to be ‘such a selfish performer on the Insaniyat sets’ as to leave him with no room for acting manoeuvre at all. Dev Anand was known for his urban roles but this was his only rustic character and he was not comfortable at all but once he committed to do the film he gave his best. At the time of release Dilip Kumar took away all the credit of the success but later Dev’s stoic performance got the deserved due and now it is a cult classic. All is in the past and for now this is the only film where we can see the two stalwarts together once and for all.

Watch the classic blockbuster here.
