AUSTRALIAN OPEN 2017 RESULTS
One of the most popular saying goes FORM IS TEMPORARY, CLASS IS PERMANENT and the difference maker is AGE. But all that is passe if 2017 is any indication be it any sport especially the AUSTRALIAN OPEN where it’s time of the 30s, have any doubts then look at the achievers in terms of reaching at least the FINALS of The First GRAND SLAM of 2017.
SERENA 35, VENUS 36, MIRJANA 36, FEDERER 35, NADAL 30, BRYAN Brothers 38, SANIA MIRZA 30 and no that’s not their titles it’s their age which mattered or used to matter as of now CLASS IS PERMANENT that’s it, period.
ROGER FEDERER beats RAFEL NADAL
6-4 3-6 6-1 3-6 6-3
If someone had been asked who will be the finalists then the two gentleman who made it would be the last on most minds not because of the sheer class which they posses but because they had been out with injuries.
Roger the greatest of all time? Most had little doubts but his record in finals 2-6 against his arch rival always lacked clout, but not anymore, at least for the time being he is the greatest because ,At last he got better of NADAL to win HIS record 18th grand slam title in a 5 set see-saw battle with 3 breaks in the final set testimony to how close it was.
As for RAFEL if any youngster is trying to make it big some day, it’s his hard work and how to be at the TOP even if have half the talent as his victor has to come, there is no one to look beyond for inspiration in work ethics.
Salute to both ROGER and NADAL for giving us such moments which make life so much more in terms of inspiration and entertainment.
FEDERER was on verge of getting his maiden loss after being 2 sets up but held his cool to beat world No.4 and fellow countryman STAN WAWRINKA.
7-5 6-3 1-6 4-6 6-3.
NADAL had to dig deep to come out victorious in a 5sets epic before getting better of the resurgent and inform GRIGOR DIMITROV of Bulgaria which lasted almost 5hours.
6-3 5-7 7-6 6-7 6-4
SERENA WILLIAMS wins WOMENS SINGLES TITLE
By beating her 15months elder sister VENUS 6-4 6-4 in an error prone final which didn’t reach the heights expected, actually rarely have the two siblings gone to the wire in head-on clashes.
This was Serena’s 7th AUSTRALIAN OPEN TITLE and 23rd overall (Highest in open era), only one behind MARGARET COURT(whose 13 were before open era began in 1968). The cherry on the cake was retaining her world no1 ranking, though it seemed that was the last thing on her mind and number 23 was what she was gunning for, one more than STEFFI GRAF of GERMANY. As for VENUS, it was commendable to be back in finals of a GRAND SLAM after 2008, also becoming the oldest finals in the Aussie slam.
Serena got better of 36-year-old MIRJANA LUCIC-BARONI 6-2 6-1. The scoreline didn’t matter as it was the way against all odds in her personal life how MIRJANA reached where only few dream is what legends are made of.
Venus triumphed over fellow county player COCO VANDEWEGHE who at 25 was the only odd women out in terms of age, shows how this tournament has penned out for the BLASTS from the PAST.
